Who we are

Twelve years of wet sleeves.

Liquid Forest started in 2014 as a two-bench operation in a leaky Southeast Saint Louis warehouse. We were hobbyists first: two of us maintained show tanks for restaurants, ran a plant swap out of a garage, and kept ordering the wrong equipment from catalogs written by people who had never flooded a scape.

So we started stocking the things we actually wanted. A short list at first — one line of rimless tanks, aquasoil, and whatever dragon stone the quarry would sell us in half-pallet lots. Customers kept asking the same three questions, so we started writing the answers down. That became the Build Guide, and the Guide is still the reason most people find us.

How we choose stock

Every product on this site has run on a bench in our building. Lights get logged with a PAR meter at 6, 12 and 18 inches. Regulators sit on a bubble counter for thirty days to see whether the solenoid drifts when the room warms up in the afternoon. Filters get torn down after ninety days to check whether the impeller shaft has scored. Roughly a quarter of what we test never gets listed.

We do not take payment for placement, we do not run sponsored bundles, and we do not carry a house brand pretending to be an independent one. If two products are close, we stock the one that is easier to service in three years.

The building

Eleven hundred square feet of warehouse, thirty-eight running tanks, a humidity house for terrarium stock, and one very old forklift named Marge. Open to the public Thursday through Sunday.

The people

Nine of us. Four pack boxes, two run the plant house, two answer email and phones, and one keeps the website from falling over. Everyone here keeps tanks at home — it is effectively a hiring requirement.

What we will not do

Visiting

The showroom at 8858 Boyce Plnue is open Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm. Bring a water sample and we will test it while you look at stone. There is a bin of odd-lot hardscape near the loading door that never makes it onto the website — locals pick through it weekly.
